My time travel fantasy

This piece of mine appears in the Daily Express.

THE new Woody Allen film Midnight In Paris is a light-hearted time travel romance. Which era would you go back to and what would you miss from the modern world?

The prospect of time travel is something which has fascinated mankind for generations.

In Woody Allen’s sparkling new film Midnight In Paris, scriptwriter and self-confessed nostalgist Gil Pender (played by Owen Wilson) is magically transported back to Paris in the 1920s where he meets his literary heroes Ernest Hemingway and T S Eliot.

We asked celebrities which time in the past they’d like to travel back to:

That is a tough question. Based on politics, I would like to be transported to the late 1940s, because of the opportunity to rebuild the world from the ashes of World War II.

I think the immediate post-war period was perhaps the last big opportunity to create a more just world (so far, we can hope for the future!). Many of my political heroes, such as Giorgio La Pira, were quite active at that time as well.

I would certainly miss some of the more modern breakthroughs in medicine as well as the computer and Internet, but I think the superior social life of that era would more than make up for it.

I think we are currently living in one of the most interesting times in human history and with access of broadband internet and alternative news sources we get to see it unfold away from the filter of the mass media.
