Wally of the Week:Teressa Groenewald-Hagerman

What do you call someone who kills an elephant for a bet?

Yeah, you're right,'Wally' is far too mild a term, but until we have a 'Barbaric Bas...d' of the Week award, it will have to do.

The Daily Express and Daily Mail both cover this truly horrific story:

American Teressa Groenewald-Hagerman, 39, was so pleased with becoming the first woman known to have killed an elephant with a bow and arrow that images have been posted on the internet.
She told how after killing the animal at dusk in Africa she left it overnight before returning the next day to check it was dead.
She said she spent eight days on the hunt in Zimbabwe before getting close enough to take a shot.
“It was shot near dark. We went back the next day and found him. I was in the middle of 37 elephants when I took my shot. This was my first bow kill and first woman to take an ele with a bow.”
She added: “It was at 12 yards kneeling.”

Will Travers, of the Born Free Foundation, says it all:

“What kind of person would kill an elephant with a bow to win a bet? She needs therapy. It is sickening but unfortunately there are people who are willing to do this. Elephants live in tight family units and we know through research that they show signs of being able to grieve. There are people who would say that this is not far short of murder".

And I'd be one of them.

Runner-up in this week’s Wally of the Week is the ‘admiring blogger' called BO-N-ARO, who wrote:

“12 yards!!! I bet they had a great blood trail because of the low entry!!
“That has to be one of the best examples of setting a goal and working hard to achieve it!”

Yeh, right.....

One further point:

The Daily Mail records:

Hunting elephants for sport is legal in some parts of Africa and many tour companies allow tourists to visit on organised hunting trips.

What an indictment of so-called ‘socialist’ Zimbabwe that it allows rich Americans to come over and butcher its wildlife.

ps If you've got the stomach for it you can read of Ms Groenewald-Hagerman's exploits and other carnage on the 'Hunts of a Lifetime' website. Can you even begin to understand the mentality of people who think that slaughtering magnificent animals is fun?

Well said. How typical of Robert Mugabe's idiocy that he permits this outrage to take place. If that stupid grinning verminous slut wanted to achieve something, why could she not instead give her money away to help the people of Zimbabwe suffering under one of the world's stupidest governments? I hope that someone gives her and her family the same treatment she gave that magnificent noble creature.

Still, it's not as bad as shooting Palestinian children for fun.

I used to foxhunt, but Tony Blair put paid to that. Then the foxes ate all our lambs.

I think as long as it's legal, doesn't endanger the species and is done humanly, hunting is perfectly acceptable. How come hunting an elephant in Africa is seen as worse than hunting a deer in Ohio?

some ppl are so lame so boring and rotten in their life, that the only interesting thing they can think of is travel 1000km and remove the life of a defendless creature, first if we would all think like this retard woman Teressa then life on earth would be extinct, and second most of us have found the meaning of life in a thousands maybe billions other things in life. Nice job Terresa dont blame u having a peanut brain, well ofc u leave in caves and hunt animals for fun, hope some day an wild animal make u his trophy,...hmm.. but no, not even animals kill for fun.

In response to Roland Hulme's comment, I dont see how shooting an elephant then allowing it to stumble 500 yards then letting it die a slow painful death during the night is very humane at all???!!!

Also, Blair has not actually put paid to foxhunting. The law is so poorly-phrased that most of it is still going on with little change. But the media don't care, because they have now decided to put all their energies into getting the Tories back in power, and they'll probably repeal the law anyway.

I couldn't hunt, though riding (as a pastime, nothing else) is one of the highlights of my life.

I've told my children many times that I would gladly hunt animals for food if that was the only way for my children to have food.

That having been said, I take no joy in this pointless killing, not even as a proof-of-concept.

That having been said, Anonymous wants someone to kill her family with bow and arrow? Isn't that a bit much?

currently elephants are overpopulating zimbabwe. villagers have to slaugter then to protect farm land and other animals habitats, they even cull them now. Some elephants starve as a result of the overpopulation as well.

Unless you are all vegetarians, you are all hypocrits.

This exchange of e-mails illustrates to a nicety the inanity of anonymous blogging. What on earth is the point of it?
I once criticised an Anonymous for ridiculing his students' poor spelling and grammar when he had made a howler himself.Another Anonymous wrote in and said his grammar was perfect and in patronising terms that there was more than one Anonymous blogger commenting on that posting.
Craig Murray not only blogs under his own name but once gave his address if anybody wanted to come round and disagree with him. This is going too far : some brave anonymous nutter could stick a brick through your window.
I think as a matter of good form, you should be willing to put your name to contentious opinions .

Too bad you are not as upset about the beheading of a journalist by the "religion of peace" than they are about a hunter who killed an animal.

You said it eloquently Neil.

I remember when BBC1 had a documentary in which lions kill small elephant, they had to justify it as they need to eat, this is their food ..etc, and although it was very fair and acceptable, they had to cut the killing process....

If lions want to eat, Teressa had stain her hands with blood, and her conscious with shame forever

thanks, Dan.

War Eagle seems to be about the only commenter who's actually INFORMED and not a raging hypocrite. You can't go on about the cruelty of hunting animals if you've been munching chicken nuggets or wear leather shoes.

Patrice Greanville said...

Roland Hulme, like most hunters, attempts to defend his indifference to the idea of killing animals for kicks—a morally questionable, degenerate, and I might add, cowardly, activity despite all the macho fireworks—by silly argumentation. Since there is no dearth of cats and dogs in America, why don't we allow hunters to indulge their passion for killing on them? That should take care of the notion that we should protect animals from human depredation only when "a species is in danger of extinction."

Second, while animal exploiters do have a point in flagging down the glaring inconsistency of people who decry hunting elephants, for example, but go on eating meat, chicken, etc., as usual, he forgets that that, per se, does not make them hypocrites, but merely incomplete human beings in their evolution toward perhaps a better moral position.

Such self-serving defense against critics of hunting is also hypocritical and obtuse because it rests its reasoning on a "straw man" platform—an absolute.

Life is full of degrees and nuances, and ALL human and even theological law, for those who pay heed to such things, reflect that elementary distinction.

Thus killing a person accidentally or via negligence is manslaughter, but setting up a campaign of ethnic cleansing, or launching an unwarranted war, as Bush-Blair did, is mass murder, a Nuremberg-class offense. Degrees and magnitude in the crime count. It's different for a person to consume a glass of milk than to go out of your way in time and effort like this moral; retard Teressa Groenewald-Hagerman did, just to get your kicks chasing after and murdering a helpless animal.

As for WarEagle, his protestation falls into the same class as Hulme's. The solution to the "overpopulation of elephants"—a species widely recognized as acutely endangered throughout Africa and Asia— is to stop human encroachment on wildlife, improve the economy of Africa to the benefit of the majorities, and/or relocate animals to protected areas under national and international trusteeship.

It's undeniable that if we spent a miniscule fraction of what we spend invading other countries, killing and maiming millions, and destroying entire civilizations, if we put such energy and resources into saving environments and animals, and assisting the poorest humans in our global family, these things would not happen. But that would require a much more civilized world than we have, as the continued existence of a multitude of backward hunter types and assorted selfish degenerates on the planet abundantly proves.

And Sarah Palin shooting animals from a helicopter. What is it with some people and power?

Roland, I can't imagine there are many who'd complain about a legitimate need to cull the predators killing your lambs. But there's a big difference between necessity and sport.
